Give Okayama one night, two at most: Kōrakuen and the castle fill a half day, then use it as the rail base for Kurashiki and the Kibi Plain.
Okayama is the San'yō Shinkansen stop most travellers sleep through, 45 min from Osaka and 35 min from Hiroshima. The payoff is compact: Kōrakuen garden and the black castle sit 15 minutes from the station on foot, and the Kibi Plain, Kurashiki and Tsuyama are all day trips from the same bed. One night covers the city; a second buys you a cycling day or a run to the coast.

Get around
Two tram lines leave the east side of JR Okayama Station; the Higashiyama line stops at Shiroshita, the closest stop to the castle and garden. City buses cover the rest, with short hops from ¥100. IC cards (Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo) work on trams and buses; pay cash at the front when you get off if you have no card. Taxis start at ¥630.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Cash is still needed on some trams and buses; the driver does not give change, but there is a coin machine on board.
- Okayama Castle's keep has been closed for rebuilding at times: check the official site before you go.
- Kōrakuen closes at 18:00 Apr–Sep and 17:00 Oct–Mar; last entry is earlier than the gate time.
- Summer is humid and the rainy season runs through late June and July; pack for it or shift your dates.
One of Japan's calmer big cities; the real risks are summer heat, tram and bus fares paid in cash, and cycling the Kibi Plain in the rain. Standard Japan precautions apply.
