Oita is the capital of Oita Prefecture and a working city, not a resort. Its draw is practical: JR Sonic trains from Hakata (about 2 h), cheap tonkotsu ramen and tori-ten, a compact station district, and quick access to Beppu's onsen, Takasakiyama's monkeys and the Umitamago aquarium. Sights are spread out and thin for a full day, so most trips give it one night or pass through on the way to Beppu, Yufu or Taketa.

Get around
The station district is walkable. Buses leave from Oita Station and Tokiwa department store for outer sights. Bicycles rent for about ¥200 a day at the station. JR lines (Nippo, Hohi, Kyudai) and the East Kyushu Expressway connect the region.
