Ogaki is a mid-sized Gifu city on the Tokaido Main Line, about 10 minutes by train from Gifu and roughly 30 minutes from Nagoya. It is a junction for three local lines and the eastern gateway to Sekigahara. Sights cluster within walking distance of Ogaki Station, so most travellers use it as a cheap bed near Nagoya or a short stop, not a multi-day base.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Ogaki Station to the castle is about 15 minutes on foot, and the Basho museum and Funamachi canal sit together a few minutes further south. Sunomata and Kamiishizu were merged into the city and have no station, so reach them by bus from the station or from Gifu. JR Tokaido, Yoro and Tarumi lines cover the region.

Scams and watch-outs
- Sunomata and Kamiishizu have no train station: plan a bus or a taxi, or skip them.
- The castle keep is a 1959 concrete reconstruction with a museum inside, not an original keep.
- Local trains on the Tokaido line are busy at commuter hours; stand clear of the doors with bags.
Ogaki is a quiet, low-risk city. The real issues are summer heat, a thin late-night train and bus schedule, and the fact that the interesting parts of the city are spread across three disconnected districts.
