Odiham is a large Hampshire village, not a town: a 13th-century castle ruin, a Georgian high street and the Basingstoke Canal towpath, all walkable in two to three hours. It works as a half-day stop between Basingstoke and Farnborough, or as a base only if you have a car and want quiet.

Get around

On foot. The High Street, All Saints Church and the canal are within 15 minutes of each other; the castle ruin is a 25–30 min walk north along the towpath. A car helps for Greywell, Newlyns Farm Shop and the surrounding lanes.

  • No railway station in the village: Hook is about 3 miles (5 km) away with an hourly bus, Winchfield is closer but has no bus.
  • The castle is an unstaffed ruin with no facilities, no café and no shelter: bring water and check the weather.
  • The Greywell Tunnel is closed to boats and the bat colony is protected: do not enter.
  • Country lanes around Greywell and North Warnborough have no footway in places; walk facing traffic.
  • Village pubs stop serving food in the mid-afternoon: check kitchen hours before you set out.

Very safe. The real risks are country lanes with no footway, an unlit towpath after dark and slippery mud along the canal in winter.
