Oceanside is a mid-size Pacific-coast city in northern San Diego County, sitting between Camp Pendleton and Carlsbad. It has a long sandy beach, a working pier, a small harbour and one of California's largest Spanish missions. It is also a genuine rail junction: Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, the COASTER to San Diego and Metrolink to Orange County all stop here, so it works as a car-free base for North County. Most travellers use it for two nights of beach plus a day trip, or as a single rail stop.

Get around
Downtown is walkable: the train station, pier, beach and most restaurants sit within a few blocks. NCTD runs the BREEZE local buses and the SPRINTER light rail east to Escondido; the COASTER runs south to San Diego and Metrolink north to Orange County. Coast Highway, Mission Avenue, El Camino Real, Vista Way, College Blvd and Oceanside Blvd are the main arteries, with I-5, CA-76 and CA-78 for the region. A car helps for the mission, Guajome Park and the lagoons.
