Ocean Shores, New South Wales
Ocean Shores
Base here 2 nights if you have a car and want Byron Bay without Byron prices; without a car, stay in Byron or Brunswick Heads instead.
Ocean Shores is a small beach town off the Pacific Motorway, about 30 minutes north of Byron Bay and an hour south of the Queensland border. It is a residential strip with a shopping centre, a motel and beaches at New Brighton and South Golden Beach. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Northern Rivers, and you need a car to make that work.

- Rips and unpatrolled stretches on the local beaches: swim between the flags at patrolled times.
- Bluebottles and occasional sharks are reported on this coast; check local beach reports.
- Bushfire risk in the surrounding hills in dry summers: follow NSW RFS advice.
- The town is named the same as Ocean Shores, Washington, USA: check you have booked the right one.
