Oberlin
Oberlin, Ohio
Give Oberlin one full day, two if you want a concert and the art museum: walk downtown and Tappan Square, sleep one night, skip a car.
Oberlin is a small college town of about 8,300 people in Lorain County, roughly 35 miles west-southwest of Cleveland. The draw is the college campus, a serious college art museum, a Frank Lloyd Wright house and a conservatory that puts on hundreds of free concerts a year. Everything sits inside about 3 square miles, so you walk it. Most travellers come for a day or a single night on the way between Cleveland and the Lake Erie shore.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Public transport from Cleveland Hopkins airport has been discontinued in the past; confirm any shuttle before booking a flight that lands late.
- The town empties when the college is out of session — check term dates if concerts or campus life are the reason for your trip.
- Winter brings snow and ice on pavements; summer can be humid.
- Small-town hours: many shops and restaurants close early and some close on Sundays or Mondays.
A calm small town; the realistic issues are winter ice, deer and dark rural roads if you drive at night, and quiet streets after the bars close. Standard US precautions apply.
