Oak Hill
Oak Hill, West Virginia
Sleep in Oak Hill only for a cheaper bed 15 min from the New River Gorge: 1 night, car required, or stay in Fayetteville instead.
Oak Hill is the largest town in Fayette County and a low-cost bed base on US-19, about 15 minutes from the New River Gorge Bridge and Fayetteville. It is a coal-heritage town, not a resort: Main Street, a small museum, a railroad depot and one rafting outfitter. Almost everything you came for — gorge overlooks, rafting put-ins, the bridge — sits outside town, so a car is close to essential. One night is enough; two if you are rafting and want a cheap bed between runs.

Get around
You need a car. US-19 links Oak Hill to Fayetteville (about 15 min) and Beckley (about 20 min); I-77 and I-79 are the long-distance routes. Mountain Transit Authority runs weekday bus service across Fayette and neighbouring counties, but schedules are thin and useless for gorge trailheads. Taxis exist but are expensive; rideshare coverage is patchy — check before you rely on it.

- Downtown Main Street
- Small independent lodging and cafés; quieter evenings, still a drive to the gorge.
- Minden Road
- Rafting outfitter with on-site lodging and camping; the closest thing to a gorge base inside town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No car means no gorge: trailheads, overlooks and rafting put-ins are all outside town.
- Cell signal drops in the gorge and on back roads; download offline maps.
- Minden is a Superfund site with a history of PCB contamination — do not poke around old mine ground or drink from local streams.
- Winter ice and summer storms close Fayette Station and some gorge roads without much warning.
- Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are before tax.
Oak Hill itself is a quiet small town and feels safe by day; the real risks are driving US-19 and I-77, ice on gorge roads, and walking old mine ground around Minden. Lock the car and do not leave valuables visible at trailheads.
