Nyngan
Stop one night in Nyngan if you are driving the Barrier or Mitchell Highway; skip it as a destination unless you have a car.
Nyngan is a small service town of about 2,000 people on the T-intersection of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways in northwestern New South Wales. It exists for travellers crossing the western plains by car: fuel, a motel bed, a riverside park and a flood memorial. There is no public transport and no scheduled flights, so a car is the difference between a useful stop and a stranded one.

Get around
No taxis and no public transport in Nyngan. The town centre, the old railway station visitor centre and the highway strip are walkable; Rotary Park and the riverside caravan park sit along the Bogan River a short walk or drive from the middle of town. You need your own car for the highways and for anything beyond town, so fuel up here before the long empty stretches west to Cobar and Broken Hill or north to Bourke.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport and no taxis: arriving without a car leaves you stuck.
- Summer heat is dangerous: carry water, check the forecast, do not walk far in the middle of the day.
- Long gaps between fuel and services on all highways out of town; fill up before you leave.
- Kangaroos and stock on the road at dawn and dusk; avoid driving those hours if you can.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. There is no public transport, so plan your own way in and out.
