Nuuk

Nuuk is Greenland's capital and a small fjord town: two full days cover the museum, the cathedral, the cultural centre and a boat trip, and the risk is weather, not distance: keep a buffer day before any flight out.

Nuuk has about 20,000 people and one main road, so the town fits in a day on foot and taxi. The trips that go wrong are the weather-dependent ones: a fog or wind day that grounds flights, a boat trip cancelled at short notice, and a museum closed on a Monday. Four small areas cover the town; keep one bed, add a fjord boat trip, and leave a spare day before the way home.

Nuuk Airport (GOH)
GOH to Nuuk: one short taxi ride of about 10–15 minutes; the risk is the flight, since fog and wind delay or divert landings, and the airport has few flights a day.

Walk inside a cluster; taxi or the city bus between clusters (route numbers not confirmed until verified).

Late at night

Language

Greenlandic (Kalaallisut), an Inuit language, is the official language and the mother tongue of most people. Danish is widely spoken, especially in Nuuk, and English is common among younger people and in tourism.

  • 'Aluu' (hi), 'qujanaq' (thank you), 'inuugujoq' (hello, formal).
  • Words are long: one word can carry a whole sentence.
