Nusaybin
Stop for one night on the D400, see the church and mosque downtown, then use a taxi for Dara; skip if you are not passing through.
Nusaybin is a Kurdish border town on the D400 east-west highway, 62 km from Mardin and 1 km from the Syrian frontier. The border crossing is closed and the old north-south road is gone, so the town is a road stop, not a destination. Its draw is a compact pair of 4th- and 12th-century monuments downtown and the Byzantine ruins of Dara, 30 km away. One night covers it; two if you add Beyazsu and the St Augin monastery.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Syrian border is closed: there is no crossing at Nusaybin, and the old north-south road is gone. Do not walk south toward the frontier.
- The Byzantine colonnades 200 m south of St Jacob's church sit inside the closed border zone and cannot be visited.
- Near the border your phone may latch onto a Syrian network: switch off roaming or pick your carrier manually.
- 5G has not reached this area; 4G works on all Turkish carriers.
- Some hotels have a poor record on honouring bookings: confirm your reservation the day before.
The town itself is calm and the border is closed, so the real risks are heat in summer, the closed frontier zone to the south, and phone roaming that picks up a Syrian carrier. Carry lira in small notes; cards work in hotels but not everywhere.
