Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is the largest of the three islands off Bali's southeast coast, 247 km² of limestone cliffs, rough roads and world-class diving. Most visitors arrive on a day cruise and see one or two viewpoints; staying 2–3 nights lets you reach the east coast beaches and the dive sites without racing a return boat. Infrastructure is basic: bring rupiah, expect bumpy roads and book your boat in advance.

Get around
No ride-hailing apps on the island. Scooter rental is the practical option (Rp 50,000–100,000 per day, 2026 estimate) but only if you already ride confidently on narrow, steep, broken roads. Cars with drivers cost around Rp 650,000 per day (2026 estimate) and are the safer choice for groups. Taxis wait at Banjar Nyuh and Buyuk harbours; hotels arrange pickups. Bemos and truck-backs run the north coast road only.

Scams and watch-outs
- Speedboats cross open ocean: wear the lifejacket, sit at the back, and expect to get wet boarding.
- Roads away from the north coast are steep and stone-strewn; scooter accidents are the main tourist injury here.
- Only a few ATMs (Sampalan, Toyapakeh) and they run out: bring enough rupiah.
- Kelingking's beach is a 400 m cliff descent, not a stroll; the viewpoint is the safe option.
- Do not swim at Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) at high tide, and check tides at Suwehan.
- Strong, unpredictable currents at many dive sites: dive with an operator, not on your own.
The island is calm and welcoming; the real risks are scooter crashes on steep broken roads, rough speedboat crossings and strong currents at dive sites. Bring rupiah, ride within your ability and take the driver if you are unsure.
