Nunavik is Arctic Quebec north of the 55th parallel: 14 coastal villages, no road link to the south, and no roads between villages either. Everything moves by Air Inuit or Canadian North, so a visit is a flight itinerary, not a road trip. Base in Kuujjuaq or Kuujjuarapik for a first trip; add a second village only if you have a week and a reason (a crater, a park, a museum).

  • No road link to southern Quebec: the Trans-Taiga Road ends near the 55th parallel, hundreds of km south of Kuujjuaq.
  • Clinics with nurses exist in each village, but the nearest emergency hospital can be several hours away by plane.
  • Winter means extreme cold, snow blindness risk and isolation; summer highs in Inukjuak average about 13 °C.

Severe Arctic climate: long, bitterly cold winters with the surrounding seas frozen; summer stays cool — Inukjuak averages about 13 °C highs in summer and −21 °C in January. Annual temperatures run up to 15 °C colder than marine Northern Europe at similar latitudes.
