Give Numazu one night for the port seafood and the Fuji view over Suruga Bay; skip it if you only have time for Mishima or Hakone.
Numazu sits on the JR Tokaido Main Line between Atami and Shizuoka, and is the terminus of the Gotemba Line. It is a working fishing port with a deep-sea aquarium, a pine-backed beach and a cheap water-gate viewpoint, and it is the closest Tokaido town to the Uchiura coast. Most travellers use it as a single night between Hakone and Shizuoka, or as a base for the western Izu Peninsula.

Get around
The centre is walkable from Numazu Station, but the port, Senbon Beach and Uchiura need a bus. Tokai and Izu-Hakone buses leave from the station for Numazu Port, Senbon-hama-koen and Uchiura. The JR Tokaido Main Line runs east to Mishima and Atami and west to Fuji and Shizuoka; the Gotemba Line starts here.

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- You cannot use an IC card from east of Atami, including Tokyo, because the station is run by JR Tokai; buy a paper ticket or adjust your fare at Atami.
- Port restaurants close early and some shut one day a week; check before you travel out.
- Summer is hot and humid, and the beach and port are exposed; carry water.
- Buses to Uchiura and the mikan orchards are infrequent; check the last return.
