Nuku'alofa
Nuku'alofa is a morning city that stops on Sunday: do the market before 09:00, take the blowholes on a weekday morning, rest at midday, and plan the whole trip around the Sunday closure.
Nuku'alofa is a small, flat capital on Tongatapu with a market, a wooden palace seen from the road and large churches. By law Sunday is a day of rest: shops, tours and domestic flights stop. The south-west blowholes are a car ride away and taxis are plentiful by day. Four clusters cover a first visit; the outer islands need a flight or ferry and a separate plan.

Language
Tongan (lea faka-Tonga) is spoken at home and in church; English is taught in schools and used in tourism and business. A few Tongan words go a long way.
- The glottal stop (fakau'a, written ') is a real consonant: Ha'apai is 'Ha-apai', not 'Hapai'.
- Tonga has a respectful register for nobles and a royal register for the king; visitors are not expected to use them.

- Faikava: Accept the cup with both hands and drink it down; say 'mālō'; avoid: Refusing loudly or leaving without thanks
- Status: Let elders and hosts lead; follow the seating you are given; avoid: Sitting higher than a noble or elder
- Gifts: Bring small gifts for hosts (food, school supplies); avoid: Handing money to children

- Unlicensed whale boats: Book only operators with a current whale-swim licence (ask to see it); cheap unlicensed trips crowd the animals and have no safety briefing.
- Taxi fare shift: Agree the fare before you get in; ask your guesthouse for a normal price.
- Card surcharges and tax extras: Ask for the all-in price with the 15% tax and surcharge before paying.
- Overstays by mistake: Check the date stamped on arrival; extensions must be requested in Nuku'alofa before it expires.
