Novosibirsk is Siberia's largest city and the main Trans-Siberian stop between Omsk and Krasnoyarsk, two days from Moscow by rail. Almost all trains call at Novosibirsk-Glavny. The centre is compact and walkable; the science town of Akademgorodok, 30 km south, is the one trip worth leaving the centre for. English is limited outside hotels and younger staff.

Get around
The centre is compact: the station to Lenin Square is about a 20-minute walk. The metro covers the centre; buses, trams, trolleybuses and marshrutkas fill the gaps, with a single ride at RUB 35 or less (2026 estimate). Buy a transport card or pay cash on marshrutkas. Note the trolleybus terminus called "Airport" serves a disused airfield, not OVB.

- Winter is the real risk: -20°C is routine and -40°C happens. Frostbite and hypothermia are possible without proper layers, hat, gloves and boots.
- English is uncommon outside hotels and younger people; keep addresses written in Russian.
- Pickpockets work the Central Market and Baraholka; keep bags in front.
- Check your government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything, and check card and payment access: foreign cards may not work.
