Give Novi Sad 2 nights: one for the Habsburg centre and Petrovaradin fortress, one for Fruška Gora. Skip it only if you have no time beyond Belgrade.
Novi Sad is Serbia's second city and the capital of Vojvodina, an hour north of Belgrade by fast train. It was shaped by the Habsburgs, not the Ottomans, so the centre looks closer to Vienna or Budapest than to Belgrade. It is flat, walkable and a university town, with the Petrovaradin fortress across the Danube and the Fruška Gora wine hills 15 km away. Two nights covers it well; the Exit Festival in early July fills every bed.

The centre is small enough to walk: Trg Slobode, Zmaj Jovina, Dunavska and the promenade are all within 15 minutes of each other. City buses cost a flat RSD 100, cash to the driver, roughly 04:30 to midnight; lines 4, 10, 14 and 15 link the stations to the centre, 1 and 8 go to Štrand, 3 to Petrovaradin. Taxis are cheap (cross-town about RSD 150–200) but use a known firm. - Greeting: Firm handshake; three cheek kisses among friends — follow the other person's lead; avoid: A limp handshake or avoiding eye contact

Scams and watch-outs
- Use only major taxi firms (Pan, Vojvođani, SOS, Delta, Novus, Naš, Lav); unaffiliated cars at the stations can charge several times the normal fare.
- The main railway station was closed after a roof collapse; trains stop at Petrovaradin instead, with no replacement bus. Check SrbijaVoz before you travel.
- Cross-border rail between Hungary and Serbia has been suspended for engineering works; the Belgrade–Novi Sad line runs.
- Smoking is still common in cafés and bars despite partial bans.
- Summer afternoons can pass 35 °C; swim early at Štrand or the Spens pool to avoid crowds and heat.
Novi Sad is a safe, low-crime city; the real risks are unlicensed taxis at the stations, summer heat, and heavy drinking around Exit week. Standard precautions apply at night near the station.
