Nouméa

Nouméa is a mornings-on-the-water, afternoons-in-the-shade city: market at 07:00, Place des Cocotiers before the heat, beaches late — and a booked transfer for the 45–60 minute run from La Tontouta.

Nouméa is spread along a peninsula: the centre, the Moselle marina, the Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata are each walkable but 3–7 km apart, and the airport is 50 km away with no rail. The trips that go wrong land on a night flight with no pickup, or count on a bus timetable that has changed since the 2024 unrest. Four clusters cover a first visit; the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands are flights or ferries away from one kept bed.

La Tontouta International Airport (NOU)
NOU to Nouméa: one pre-booked transfer or airport taxi, 45–60 minutes over 50 km — the risk is a night landing with no ride and no bus, not the road.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster; taxi between clusters (the city bus runs but is slow).

Passes
No pass. Taxis are the practical choice between clusters; check for a meter or agree the fare first.
Late at night
No rail: taxis run in the evening but are fewer late at night; book the return from restaurants.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'Bonjour' when entering shops; handshake; bise among friends; avoid: Skipping the greeting before asking a question
  • Tribal visit: Present the coutume to the chief or elder via your host; avoid: Walking straight onto tribal land or beaches
  • Dress: Cover up away from the beach; modest swimwear on islands; avoid: Topless sunbathing on tribal beaches
  • Politics: Listen and ask open questions; avoid: Taking sides loudly on independence
  • Photography: Ask before photographing people and houses in tribes; avoid: Photographing sacred sites

Red lines

  • Tribal land and beaches outside the city need permission and often a small customary gift (the coutume).
  • Do not photograph people at close range without asking.
  • Topless sunbathing is not accepted on tribal beaches.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Agree the fare or check for a meter before a long taxi ride such as the La Tontouta run.
  • Do not leave valuables in parked cars at beach car parks.
