- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
- West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
- Senegal ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Senegalese government sources before booking.
- Senegal ↗Dress modestly in towns and at religious sites: shoulders and knees covered.
- Senegal ↗Check your government's advice before travelling to parts of the Casamance region in the south.
Northern Senegal is the Saint-Louis run: a colonial island town, a fishing quarter on the Langue de Barbarie, and the Djoudj bird sanctuary an hour inland. It is a 4–5 hour drive from Dakar, so it works as a 2–3 night add-on, not a day trip. Everything else up here — Podor, the Senegal River road, Matam — is for travellers with their own car and time.

- Djoudj is seasonal wetland — parts close when water levels are wrong. Confirm before you commit a day.
- The Jazz Festival in late May fills Saint-Louis beds; book weeks ahead or avoid those dates.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary | Saint-Louis | 90 min | unknown | Guided pirogue and walk; go at opening, birds are most active before the heat. Check current entry fee and whether the gate is open — the site floods and closes some months. |
| Langue de Barbarie National Park | Saint-Louis | 30 min | unknown | Pirogue from the fishing beach; pair it with Guet Ndar in one morning. |
| Podor | Saint-Louis | 240 min | unknown | Too far as a day trip; it is an overnight on the river road. |
Bags between cities
No luggage forwarding here. A hired car and driver from Dakar usually stays with you for the whole northern loop.

Peak birding (Nov–Mar) is also peak season for the whole country, so Saint-Louis rooms and Djoudj guides are busiest then.
