The Northern Plateau is Zambia's high, cool north: miombo woodland, wetlands and river headwaters spread across Northern, Muchinga and Luapula provinces. It is not a safari circuit like South Luangwa — it is a slow overland region of small towns (Kasama, Mbala, Mpika, Mansa, Mporokoso) with waterfalls, lakes and the Bangweulu Wetlands on its edge. Come if you are driving north to Tanzania, chasing shoebills, or want a Zambia without lodge convoys. Skip it on a first one-week trip: the roads are long and the headline wildlife is elsewhere.
