The Northern Highlands is Nicaragua's cool coffee country: cloud forest, farm stays and revolutionary murals in Estelí, Matagalpa and Jinotega, with Somoto Canyon and the Honduran border towns at the top. Towns sit 1–3 hours apart on the Pan-American Highway, so pick one base and day-trip rather than moving every night. Come for 2–3 nights on the way north to Honduras, or as a cool break from the Pacific heat.
