- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Peru ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Peru's migration authority (Migraciones) or a Peruvian consulate; keep the entry record you receive, as hotels may ask for it.
- Peru ↗Machu Picchu entry is by timed ticket for a named circuit, with daily caps; in high season tickets sell out weeks or months ahead. Buy tickets only from the official Ministry of Culture seller or a licensed agency.
- Peru ↗The classic Inca Trail needs a permit booked through a licensed operator, often months ahead; the trail closes every February for maintenance.
- Peru ↗Altitude sickness is common above 2,500 m: ascend gradually, rest on day one, and ask a doctor before travel if you have heart or lung conditions.
The northern coast is a 1,000 km strip of desert, surf towns and mud-brick ruins between Ecuador and Lima. It is not one place. Pick one base — Trujillo for archaeology and surf at Huanchaco, Máncora for warm water and beach time — and move north or south by overnight bus or short flight. Trying to cover Tumbes to Chimbote in one trip is a bus tour, not a holiday.

- December to April can bring heavy rain and flooding in Tumbes and Piura, and roads wash out.
- The sea is cold south of about Pacasmayo; warm water starts around Máncora.
- Border crossings to Ecuador can close or slow down without notice — check before travelling.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huanchaco | Trujillo | 30 min | check | Local buses and taxis run late; agree the fare before you get in. |
| Chan Chan and Huacas de Moche | Trujillo | 30 min | unknown | Go early; the adobe site has little shade by midday. |
| Sipán and Túcume | Chiclayo | 60 min | unknown | Tours leave in the morning; the museum at Lambayeque is the main draw. |
Bags between cities
Buses take luggage in the hold; keep valuables with you. Left-luggage at Trujillo and Chiclayo terminals is limited — check before you rely on it.

- Trujillo and Chiclayo
- Mild and dry year-round, often grey and damp in winter (June–November); little rain.
- Piura, Máncora and Tumbes
- Hot and sunny most of the year; the wettest months are December to April, when flooding is possible.
The northern coast is busiest in the southern-hemisphere summer (December–March) and around Easter; book beach beds in Máncora ahead for those weeks.
