Northampton sits roughly halfway between London and Birmingham, about 1 h by train from Euston, and works as a single-night stop or a base for Silverstone, Althorp and the canal villages. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the interesting bits outside it (Althorp, Stoke Bruerne, the heritage railways) need a car or a bus. Most travellers pass through on the way to somewhere else, and that is a fair call.
