Northam
Give Northam one night as a Wheatbelt stop between Perth and the goldfields, or a half-day on the Avon Valley loop with York and Toodyay.
Northam is the Wheatbelt's biggest town, 100 km east of Perth on the Avon River, and the rail junction where the goldfields line splits from the Avon Valley line. The centre is compact and walkable, the historic buildings sit on a working highway, and the real reasons to stop are the river park, the railway heritage and the ballooning. Most travellers see it in a few hours on the way to York, Toodyay or Kalgoorlie; one night is enough to slow down.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes end to end, but summer heat makes a car useful. Transwa coaches and the Prospector train stop at Northam station on the east side of town, with step-free access to the platform. Fuel: four filling stations; the Ampol on Wellington Street is usually the cheapest.
