The North West is Nigeria's Hausa-Fulani heartland: walled Kano, the Sokoto Caliphate legacy, mud-brick minarets and the Durbar horse parades. It is a long way from Lagos and the security picture changes state by state, so treat it as a short, guided add-on — fly into Kano, sleep in one city, and move by car with a local driver rather than by night bus.
