Treat North Sydney as a ferry port, not a destination: one night before a Marine Atlantic sailing, or a half-day stop if you are already on Cape Breton.
North Sydney is a town of about 5,700 on the east shore of Cape Breton Island and the western terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry to Newfoundland. Almost everything here serves the crossing: motels, diners, a small museum. If you are not sailing, Sydney 20 km away has more beds, food and services. If you are sailing, sleep here the night before and walk on rested.

Get around
The town is small and walkable in the centre, but the ferry terminal, mall and Highway 105 services are spread out: you need a car or taxi. Transit Cape Breton Route 5 runs from Sydney Monday–Friday about 7 times a day (45 min, $5) and 4 times on Saturday. Highway 125 links to Sydney in about 20 minutes.

- Distances on Cape Breton are longer than they look: allow time for the Cabot Trail.
A small, quiet town and one of the safer stops on Cape Breton. The real risks are winter driving on Highway 105, ferry weather delays and long unlit stretches between towns: fill the tank and do not cut it fine for check-in.
