North Smithfield is a large Rhode Island town of old mill villages — Slatersville, Forestdale, Union Village — strung along the Branch and Blackstone rivers, about 20–25 minutes by car north of Providence. There is no train and no real town centre, so it works as a half-day drive or a cheap bed outside Providence, not as a stand-alone trip. Two to four hours covers the historic core; a night only makes sense if you are using it as a bed base.

A car is effectively required: sights are spread across villages with no useful local bus. Route 146 links Providence and Worcester; Route 7 and Route 104 run north–south. Distances are short — 10–15 min between villages — but pavements are patchy, so do not plan on walking between them.
