The North Shore (Côte-Nord) is Quebec's Gulf of St. Lawrence coast: a thin ribbon of highway, fishing villages, hydro dams and whale water, backed by a roadless interior. The region is roughly the size of Italy, but almost everyone lives and travels along the shore. Route 138 runs from Tadoussac east to Natashquan; past that the Lower North Shore is reached by ferry or plane only. Most visitors cover the western half (Tadoussac to Baie-Comeau) in 2–3 days, or fly to Sept-Îles and treat the coast as a base for whale watching, Innu culture and the Manicouagan crater country.
