- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
The North Shore is the mountain wall north of Burrard Inlet: two municipalities (North Vancouver, West Vancouver) plus the villages of Deep Cove, Lynn Valley, Lower Lonsdale, Ambleside, Dundarave and Horseshoe Bay. It is a day-trip region for most visitors — the SeaBus from downtown Vancouver takes about 12 minutes — but it works as a sleep base if you want early trail starts and cheaper rooms than downtown. Grouse Mountain, the Capilano and Lynn Canyon suspension bridges, Lighthouse Park and the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal are the anchors.

Night sequences
- 0 nights
- Day trip from downtown Vancouver: SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay, then bus to Capilano or Lynn Canyon; back by evening
- 2 nights
- North Vancouver 2 nights: pick one mountain day (Grouse Mountain) and one of Lynn Valley or Deep Cove — not both in the same day
- 3 nights
- North Vancouver 2 + West Vancouver 1 (Horseshoe Bay for an early ferry)
- Hiking rescues happen most weekends in summer, mostly to unprepared visitors. Stay on marked trails and turn back with enough daylight — the forest darkens early.
- Black bears are active in summer around North Shore trails. Make noise, keep food sealed and never approach a cub.
