North Pole
North Pole, Alaska
Treat North Pole as a half-day stop from Fairbanks, not a base: 3–4 hours covers Santa Claus House, the reindeer and the postmark.
North Pole is a small town of about 2,100 people 14 miles (23 km) east of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway, built around a Christmas theme and a post office that handles huge volumes of letters to Santa each December. There is no hotel-worthy town centre beyond a few blocks, so most travellers visit from Fairbanks and sleep there.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter cold is the real risk: −26 °C (−15 °F) lows are normal in Jan–Feb, and frostbite comes fast on exposed skin.
- Roads ice over from Oct; drive for the conditions and keep an emergency kit in the car.
- Some shops and attractions cut hours or close outside summer: check before you drive out.
- Moose on the road at dusk are a genuine hazard on the Richardson Highway.
Low crime, high cold. The real risks are winter temperatures, icy roads, moose at dusk and driving distances that look short on the map.
