North Platte
Give North Platte one night, two if you want the Golden Spike Tower and Buffalo Bill Ranch without rushing. It is an I-80 stop, not a destination week.
North Platte sits on Interstate 80 in west-central Nebraska, three hours from Lincoln and four from Denver. It is the largest town in Lincoln County and the home of Bailey Yard, the biggest railroad classification yard in the world. Most travellers break a cross-country drive here for a night; the rail tower, Buffalo Bill's ranch and the World War II canteen story fill a full day.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 5–15 min apart and the interstate is the main street. The town has a trail network for walking and cycling, but distances between the rail tower, the ranch and downtown make bikes a half-day plan, not a way to run errands.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter ice and blowing snow can close I-80 sections without much warning: check Nebraska 511 before driving.
- The first two gas stations south of Exit 177 advertise prices that apply to only one or two pumps; drive a few blocks into town for normal prices.
- Buffalo Bill Ranch house and barn seasonal hours and closures: check before you go; the grounds stay open year-round.
- Summer afternoons are hot and the outdoor sights have little shade: carry water and go early.
The main risks are winter driving on I-80 — ice, blowing snow and sudden closures — and summer heat at the outdoor sights. Check Nebraska 511 before winter legs and carry water in July and August.
