Useful apps for North Macedonia: transport, maps, translation

North Macedonia is small and app-friendly: nothing is blocked, Wi-Fi is everywhere, and the practical gaps are narrow. The two that matter are ride-hailing (no Uber) and Cyrillic signage, which a camera translator handles in seconds.

Start with Google Maps. Coverage of Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola and the main highways is good, but rural roads around Brajčino, Kratovo and the Prespa villages are patchier. Download offline areas for each base before you leave Wi-Fi — data is cheap but signal in mountain areas is not guaranteed. OpenStreetMap-based apps are a useful backup for hiking trails around Matka Canyon and Pelister.

For transport, buses are the backbone of the country and timetables are best checked at the station or through the operator rather than a single national app. In Skopje, a local taxi app works for metered rides; elsewhere you call a taxi by phone or ask your guesthouse. Save your host's Viber contact — that is how drivers and landlords confirm pickups.

For money, keep your bank's card app installed with travel notifications switched on, so a blocked card is fixed in minutes rather than days. For language, an offline translator with Cyrillic camera mode reads menus, bus signs and shop labels; English is widely spoken in tourism, so you rarely need more than a phrase or two.

Set up everything before you land: download offline maps, install Viber, add your card to your bank app's travel plan, and buy your eSIM or note where to buy a prepaid SIM at the airport or in a Skopje kiosk.

Keep a paper backup. Write down your guesthouse address in Cyrillic and your host's phone number; if your phone dies, a taxi driver can still get you there. Carry a small power bank — long bus days and map use drain a phone fast.

Use Wi-Fi for big downloads and keep mobile data for maps and messages. If you are staying more than a week, a local prepaid SIM is usually cheaper than roaming; for a short trip, an eSIM avoids the shop visit.
