Normanton
One night is enough: see Krys the crocodile, ride the Gulflander if it is a Wednesday or Thursday, then push on to Karumba.
Normanton is a small Gulf Country town of about 1,200 people, 484 km north of Mount Isa and roughly 700 km from Cairns on the Savannah Way. It was a gold-rush port for Croydon in the late 1800s, and the heritage Gulflander train still runs the old line. Travellers use it as a fuel-and-bed stop between Cairns and the Gulf, or as a base for birdwatching and the Burke and Wills camp to the west.

Get around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk, but everything outside it — Karumba, Camp 119, the wetlands — is a drive on the Savannah Way. Fuel up here before heading west; the next services are far apart.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Wet season (Dec–Mar) can close dirt roads and cut off the Savannah Way west of town: check road conditions before you commit.
- Crocodiles are real in local creeks and rivers; do not swim or stand on the bank.
- Distances are long and mobile coverage is patchy outside town: carry water and tell someone your plan.
- The Gulflander runs only on set days (Wednesday out, Thursday back): a missed train means a missed trip.
Normanton is a small, quiet town and personal safety is not the main concern. The real risks are heat, long drives with patchy phone coverage, unsealed roads after rain and crocodiles in local waterways.
