Noojee
Go for one night, or a half-day stop on the Mount Baw Baw road: trestle bridge, Toorongo Falls and a trout stream, then move on.
Noojee is a 157-person timber town on the La Trobe River, the last place with food and beds before Mount Baw Baw, 48 km up the road. The draw is short: a 100 m wooden rail trestle, a 1.2 km waterfall walk, old-growth mountain ash and trout water. A car is close to essential; without one you are tied to a V/Line train plus a regional bus from Warragul.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel in town: fill up before you arrive.
- Mobile signal is patchy or absent on the Ada River and Toorongo roads.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the roads at dawn and dusk; drive slowly.
- Snow and ice on the Mount Baw Baw road in winter; carry chains if heading up.
- Free campsites have composting or basic toilets only: bring water and take rubbish out.
Very low crime; the real risks are bushfire, winter ice on the Baw Baw road, wildlife at dawn and dusk, and no phone signal on the back roads. Tell someone your route before you leave town.
