Nogent-sur-Marne
Skip as a destination: Nogent-sur-Marne is a quiet residential suburb best used as a calm base for Paris, not a place you visit for its own sights. Half a day is enough for a walk along the Marne and the Pavillon Baltard.
Nogent-sur-Marne is a wealthy eastern suburb of Paris on the Marne river, reachable by RER A in about 15 minutes from central Paris. It has a few sights – the Pavillon Baltard, the old church, the guinguettes along the river – but no reason to stay longer than a few hours unless you are sleeping there. Most travellers use it as a quiet base for Paris or as a stop on a walk from Vincennes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bonjour madame/monsieur' on entering any shop, bus or office; avoid: Asking a question before saying bonjour — it is read as rude
- Cheek kisses (la bise): Follow the other person's lead; one to four kisses depending on region; avoid: Initiating la bise with strangers or in business
- Addressing people: Use 'vous' and titles until invited otherwise; avoid: First names and 'tu' with older people or staff
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated in restaurants; call the waiter 'monsieur' or 'madame'; avoid: 'Garçon', snapping fingers, asking for the bill before you are finished
- Conversation: Debate is a pleasure; food, politics and philosophy are fair game; avoid: Asking about salary or religion; loud voices on trains
- Dinner at a home: Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums), chocolates or a good bottle; arrive 10–15 minutes late; avoid: Cutting the tip off a cheese wedge or asking for ketchup
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders in churches; avoid: Beachwear in town centres
Scams and watch-outs
- RER A can be crowded at peak hours; avoid 8:00–9:30 and 17:00–19:00 if possible.
- The Pavillon Baltard is not always open to the public – check the event schedule.
- Guinguettes along the Marne are seasonal; many close in winter.
Nogent-sur-Marne is a safe, affluent suburb. Standard urban precautions apply; the main risk is pickpocketing on the RER A during peak hours.
