Visit Nizwa on a day trip from Muscat for its fort, cattle and produce souq, and old town; add a night if you plan to push on to Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams, where the drive and cooler air reward staying longer.

Nizwa is a historic market town in the Al Dakhiliyah region, roughly 1.5 hours by road from Muscat and once Oman's capital. Its restored round fort and covered souq are among the country's most visited heritage sites, and the town is the usual gateway to the Hajar Mountains, including Jebel Akhdar's terraced villages and Jebel Shams, Oman's highest peak.

Get around

A rental car from Muscat is the usual way in; taxis and tour operators also run the route. The road up Jebel Akhdar requires a 4WD vehicle, and some car-rental contracts bar standard cars from that road entirely — check before you drive up.

Language

Arabic is the official language and road signs are bilingual. English is widely used in hotels, malls, car hire and tourism, and by the large South Asian workforce; in villages and with older Omanis a few words of Arabic help a lot.

  • Learn 'as-salaam alaykum' (peace be upon you) and the reply 'wa alaykum as-salaam'; 'shukran' is thank you.
  • Road and place names have several spellings (Nizwa/Nizwah, Sur/Soor); search by map pin, not spelling.

  • Greeting: 'As-salaam alaykum' and a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Initiating handshakes or hugs across genders
  • Hospitality: Accept coffee and a date; sit where you are shown; avoid: Refusing all hospitality or offering money to a host
  • Dress: Long trousers or skirts and covered shoulders in towns and villages; avoid: Beachwear in souqs, villages and malls
  • Right hand: Eat, give and receive with the right hand; avoid: Passing things with the left
  • Photography: Ask first; photograph buildings and landscapes freely; avoid: Photographing women, military sites or palaces
  • Mosques: Visit only at posted hours, covered, shoes off; avoid: Entering during prayers or outside visitor hours
  • Villages and falaj: Stay on paths, keep the falaj water clean; avoid: Swimming or washing in falaj channels, walking through private gardens
  • Couples: Keep affection private; avoid: Kissing or cuddling in public

Scams and watch-outs

  • Dress modestly and ask before photographing people, especially at the livestock souq.
  • The Jebel Akhdar road requires a 4WD vehicle; standard rental cars may be turned back at the checkpoint.
  • The livestock souq is busiest and most interesting early on Friday morning; other days it is quieter.
  • Summer heat in the lowlands is intense even though the mountains stay cooler.
