Niterói
Base in Rio and come for one day: ferry over at 09:00, MAC first, bayside walk, back by 18:00. Sleep here only if you want the ocean beaches.
Niterói sits across Guanabara Bay from Rio, 10–20 minutes by ferry from Praça XV, and holds the best single sight on either side of the water: Oscar Niemeyer's saucer-shaped MAC, hanging over the sea at Boa Viagem. The bayfront neighbourhoods (Icaraí, São Francisco, Charitas) are walkable and calm; the ocean beaches (Itacoatiara, Itaipu, Camboinhas) need a bus or car and a full day. Most travellers do it as a day trip from Rio and are right to.

Municipal buses leave from the terminal beside the ferry station — look for the beach name on the front. To the ocean side allow 30–50 min from downtown. On weekends the Linha Turismo hop-on bus runs from Arariboia at 10:00, 12:30 and 14:30 with seven stops (check the 2026 fare). Scams and watch-outs
- The ocean beaches are open Atlantic: currents and shore break are strong, and lifeguard cover is not guaranteed outside weekends.
- Itaipu and Camboinhas are separated by a canal; crossing by boat is faster than driving around the lagoon.
- Fortress and museum hours change on holidays and during daylight-saving shifts: check before you go.
- Buses to the ocean side thin out after dark; plan the last one or take an app car.
- Ferry queues at Praça XV are long on weekday rush hours (17:00–19:00).
Niterói has the highest HDI in Rio state and feels calmer than central Rio, but it is still a Brazilian city: no phone out on empty streets, no beach walks after dark, and use app cars at night. The ocean beaches are the real hazard — strong surf and currents.
