Ninh Bình city is a provincial town on the Hanoi–Huế railway and highway. Travellers use its station and buses, then sleep in the villages of Tam Cốc, Tràng An or Hang Múa among the limestone towers. The city merged with Hà Nam and Nam Định into a larger Ninh Bình province in 2025 (check).

- Photos: Ask first, especially in minority villages; avoid: Paying children for photos — it keeps them out of school
