Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'Ayubowan' (Sinhala) or 'Vanakkam' (Tamil) with palms together; avoid: Kissing on the cheek

  • A military base separates part of the beach; access may require a rickshaw or a walk along the main road.
  • Boat trips to Pigeon Island charge Rs19,000 per person; confirm schedule.

Nilaveli is generally safe for tourists. The main concerns are strong currents at the beach (ask locals before swimming) and the military checkpoint area; keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone on the beach after dark.
