Niihama
新居浜
Half a day to one day: the Taiko Festival in October, otherwise a quiet stop on the Shikoku rail loop. Not a base.
Niihama is a mid-sized industrial city on the Shikoku coast, best known for the Niihama Taiko Festival (16–18 Oct) when 47 drum floats parade the streets. Outside festival dates the city is calm, with a few parks and shrines. Most travellers pass through on the JR Yosan Line between Matsuyama and Takamatsu.
