Niigata is the biggest city on the Sea of Japan coast, about 2 hours from Tokyo on the Joetsu Shinkansen. It is a rice, sake and seafood city rather than a temple city: the draw is eating, the Shinano River waterfront and easy access to Sado Island and the ski country inland. Most travellers use it for one night, or as a gateway to the prefecture.

Get around
The centre is walkable and the bus network is good. City bike rental is cheap (¥100 for the first 3 hours, then ¥100 per hour, ID needed) and covers the riverside sights. Taxis are easy to find at the station; the Shinkansen and JR lines connect the prefecture.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings heavy snow and cold rain off the Sea of Japan; coastal trains can be delayed or cancelled.
- Many small restaurants and bars are cash-only; carry yen.
- Some sights sit far apart (Northern Culture Museum, Nakano Residence) and need a bus or taxi, not a walk.
- Sado Island ferries can be cancelled in rough weather: check the sailing before you commit.
Niigata is a calm, safe city; the real risks are winter weather, snow-covered pavements and late-night bars with no posted prices. Ask the total before you sit.
