Nienburg is a Weser crossing town of about 31,000 people, halfway between Hanover and Bremen on the main rail line. The old centre is compact and walkable in an afternoon: the market square, the museum quarter on Leinstrasse and the riverbank. It works as a quiet overnight stop on a Hanover–Bremen run, or as a base for the flat cycling country along the Weser and Aller. Two nights is enough; a full day of sightseeing is not.

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses cover the outskirts; taxis wait at the station. Trains run north to Bremen and south to Hanover, and the Weser and Aller cycle routes pass through town.
