Larnaca International Airport (LCA)

LCA to Nicosia: one ride-hailing car or airport transfer, about 45 minutes — buses to the capital are thin, so decide the car before you land.

Passes

No pass. Short taxi rides inside the centre are cheap; use the meter or see the fare in the app.

Late at night

No metro or rail. Taxis and ride-hailing run late; availability drops after midnight.

Zanettos Taverna

Traditional meze taverna near Eleftheria Square: go for a long lunch or an early dinner, and book for dinner; the meze is the dish.

Makarios Avenue

Modern hotels with lifts, a car at the door and a 10-minute walk to Eleftheria Square; less atmosphere, more ease.

Old Town (Laiki Geitonia)

First-timers: hotels inside the walls near Laiki Geitonia, a walk from the museum and Ledra Street; choose one with a 24h desk and a car-reachable door.

Etiquette

• Greeting: Handshake and a smile; friends and family kiss on both cheeks; avoid: Being brisk — small talk first, business second
• Hospitality: Accept a coffee or a sweet when offered in a village; it is part of the visit; avoid: Refusing everything; one small taste is enough
• The Cyprus issue: Listen if people bring it up; many have family stories from 1974; avoid: Offering opinions on who is to blame
• Churches: Light a candle if you wish (small donation), keep voices low; avoid: Shorts, bare shoulders and flash photography
• Dress in town: Casual but covered; shirts on away from the beach; avoid: Swimwear in shops, villages and churches

• Buffer zone and military areas: do not photograph, do not enter.

• Cabaret and 'hostess' bar bills: Bars with women sent to your table charge huge prices for 'drinks'; walk out if the menu has no prices.
• Hire-car damage claims: Film the car inside and out at pickup and return; take full insurance with zero excess from a known firm.
• Timeshare and 'free gift' touts: Decline scratch cards and free taxi rides to presentations.
• Unmetered taxi fares: Insist on the meter or use an app; fixed airport fares are published at the rank.
• Property investment pitches: Land title in the north is often disputed by Greek Cypriot owners; take independent legal advice before paying anything.
• Fake booking messages: Hotels never ask for card details again over WhatsApp; pay only through the platform or the hotel's own site.
