Best tours in Nice: walking, food and day tours

If you have one free morning in Nice, take a walking tour of Vieux Nice (the old town) and the Promenade des Anglais. It orients you, costs little beyond a tip, and gives you the street names you will use for the rest of the stay.

For the coast, the regional TER train does the work of a day tour at a fraction of the price: Nice to Monaco is roughly 25 minutes, and the same line continues to Èze-sur-Mer and Menton. A guided day tour only wins when you want commentary, a fixed itinerary and door-to-door pickup, or when you are going somewhere the train does not reach easily, such as the hill villages of the arrière-pays.

Book walking and food tours 2–3 days ahead in the high season (May–September); train day trips need no reservation.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for one adult. Tip-based walking tours are usually free to reserve and paid by tip at the end; €10–20 per person is the normal range.

Group size matters more than the operator's marketing. A walking tour capped at 12–15 people lets you hear the guide; a food tour with 8–10 people gets you into small shops. Ask before booking.

Walking tours typically run mid-morning and late afternoon. Food tours usually start around 10:00 and finish before lunch service, or start late afternoon. Day tours leave between 08:00 and 09:00 and return in the evening.

Museums and many shops in Nice close on Mondays; some food-tour routes skip that day. Sunday mornings are good for the market but some small producers are shut.

Check the meeting point the day before. Most walking tours meet near Place Masséna or the Promenade du Paillon; food tours often meet at the edge of the Cours Saleya market.

Most tours start in the old town or along the Promenade des Anglais, both walkable from the main hotel areas. If you are staying near the airport or in the hills, allow 30–40 minutes by tram, bus or taxi to the meeting point.

For day trips, Nice-Ville station is the hub for the coastal TER line. Buy tickets at the machine or counter; validate before boarding. The same line serves Monaco, Èze-sur-Mer and Menton, so you can build your own day tour without a guide.

If you are coming from outside France, flight times shape which tour you can join on arrival day: an early landing lets you make an afternoon walking tour, a late one does not.

Wear shoes you can walk in; old-town streets are cobbled and the castle hill has steps.

Carry water in summer. July and August afternoons are hot, so book morning tours.

Confirm whether the price includes entry fees, tastings and transport. Food tours usually include tastings; day tours often do not include museum tickets.
