The Niagara Frontier is five counties in western New York — Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming — wrapped around the Niagara River and the eastern end of Lake Erie. Buffalo and Niagara Falls are the two bases. The Falls themselves take half a day; the rest of the region is small towns, farmland, the Erie Canal and lake shoreline that reward a car. Two nights covers the Falls and Buffalo; three or four lets you add Lockport, the canal and a lake day.
