Niagara Falls, Ontario
Niagara Falls
Stay one night, two if you add wine country: the falls take half a day, the rest is Clifton Hill and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Niagara Falls, Ontario is a falls-first town: the Horseshoe and American falls sit 20 minutes' walk from most hotels, and the tourist strip is dense, walkable and built for a single overnight. Two nights only pay off if you add Niagara-on-the-Lake, the wine route or a day on the Niagara River. Peak season is May to October; winter is quiet, cheap and half the attractions still run.

Get around
The falls, Clifton Hill and Fallsview are walkable from each other, though some streets are steep. WEGO runs two hop-on hop-off routes (Green along the Niagara Parkway, Blue along Victoria and Fallsview) meeting at Table Rock; buy a one- or two-day pass before boarding, as drivers sell no fares. Niagara Transit local routes cover the rest of the city at a flat cash fare. Taxis and Uber fill the gaps.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- WEGO passes must be bought in advance from a retailer; drivers accept no cash and Presto is not valid.
- The Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle costs extra and is not covered by a standard WEGO pass.
- Falls-view rooms cost far more than city-view rooms in the same hotel; check the room, not just the hotel.
- Clifton Hill and Fallsview restaurant prices run high; walk 10 minutes inland for cheaper food.
- Border waits at the Rainbow Bridge can run over an hour in summer; carry your passport.
The tourist core is busy and well lit; the real risks are pickpockets in summer crowds, wet rocks and railings near the brink, and border queues. Keep to paths along the gorge.
