Newport, Rhode Island
Newport
Give Newport 2 nights: one for the Cliff Walk and mansions, one for the harbour and Ocean Drive. Skip it as a day trip from Boston — 1 h 35 min each way kills the day.
Newport packs colonial streets, Gilded Age mansions and a 3.5 mi cliff path into a small peninsula on Aquidneck Island. Two nights covers the core on foot; a car only helps for Ocean Drive and the beaches. Summer is peak and priced accordingly; late spring and early autumn give the same town with fewer crowds.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cliff Walk: poison ivy along the path, slippery rocks and unpaved, steep sections — stay back from the edge.
- Parking meters take coins only and cap at 3 hours; lots fill on summer weekends.
- Festival weekends (Folk and Jazz) sell out hotels months ahead and raise rates.
- Many mansions and tours are seasonal — confirm opening dates before you build a day around one.
Newport is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are the Cliff Walk's unpaved edges, summer traffic on Bellevue Avenue and drinking on the wharves. Standard US precautions apply.
