Newmarket, Suffolk
Newmarket
Give Newmarket one night if you want the horseracing museum and a race day; otherwise pass through — the town itself is a half-day.
Newmarket is a small west Suffolk town, 22 km from Cambridge and 25 km from Bury St Edmunds, built around the horse: the Jockey Club, the National Stud, Tattersalls sales ring and two racecourses. It is a rail stop on the Cambridge–Ipswich line. Most travellers use it for a race meeting, the National Horseracing Museum, or as a quiet bed between Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The rail line is single track: all trains use the same platform, so confirm which way yours is going.
- Race days (April–October) can fill beds in town and taxis get busy — book both ahead and check availability.
- Sunday trains are about every 2 hours; plan the return leg before you set out.
- Village sights such as Moulton Packhorse Bridge and the National Stud need a car, bike or taxi.
A quiet, low-crime market town; the real risks are unlit roads and pavements around the racecourse and training fields at night, and heavy traffic on the A14/A11 if you are driving.
