Newcastle, New South Wales
Newcastle
Give Newcastle 2 nights: one for the beaches and ocean baths, one for Fort Scratchley and the harbour, then use it as the base for the Hunter wineries.
Newcastle sits at the mouth of the Hunter River, 150 km north of Sydney, and is one of Australia's oldest working seaports and the world's largest coal-exporting port. The centre is walkable, the light rail links the interchange to the beach, and the ocean baths are free. Two nights covers the city; add nights for the Hunter Valley wineries or Stockton Beach.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches; rips are common on this coast.
- The Stockton ferry is a small commuter service, not a sightseeing boat: check the last sailing.
- Trackwork on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line replaces trains with buses and can add an hour.
- Summer school holidays and long weekends fill beds and the M1 northbound: book ahead.
Newcastle is a safe city by Australian standards. The real risks are surf rips, sunburn and late-night noise around the CBD pubs: swim between the flags and keep valuables out of the car at beach car parks.
