Newcastle Emlyn
Castellnewydd Emlyn
One night is enough: castle ruins, a high street and Thursday cattle market. Base here only if you have a car and want the Teifi valley.
Newcastle Emlyn is a small market town of about 1,100 people on the River Teifi, split between Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, roughly halfway between Carmarthen and Cardigan on the A484. There is no railway station. You come for the ruined 13th-century castle, the river walks and the weekly markets, then move on. Most visitors pass through in half a day; one night suits slow drivers exploring the Teifi valley.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: the nearest useful railheads are Carmarthen and Cardigan, both reached by bus or car.
- Bus services are sparse, especially evenings and Sundays: check times before you rely on them.
- Some small attractions and cafés close out of season or on Mondays and Tuesdays: check ahead.
- Narrow lanes and passing places on the surrounding country roads: drive slowly.
Very low crime; the real risks are country roads, uneven castle ground and fast-changing weather. Carry a rain layer year-round.
